Types of Sedation We Offer

Nitrous Oxide a.k.a. Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is safe for kids and adults. We administer the gas through a small mask that we place over the nose. As you breathe it in, you will start to feel deeply relaxed. Many patients also feel euphoric while under nitrous oxide sedation, hence the nickname “laughing gas.” One benefit of laughing gas, besides making it easier for nervous patients to receive treatment, is that the effects wear off almost immediately once we remove the mask. Patients who undergo treatment with nitrous oxide are usually okay to drive home or back to work afterward.

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, your sedation dentist in Charlotte will prescribe a sedative medication in pill form. You will fill the prescription and take the pill approximately one hour before your appointment. The effects of oral sedation will come on slowly and last for several hours. It is not safe to drive after taking a sedative pill. Therefore, you will need transportation to and from your appointment, and you will not be able to resume your normal routine right away. If you undergo treatment with oral sedation, plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day rather than returning to work or undertaking other activities.
