What are TMJ and TMD?
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull. You have one on each side of your head, and you can feel them by touching the area just in front of either ear. Your TMJs make it possible to open and close your mouth to eat, speak, yawn, and laugh. As you can imagine, these joints get a lot of use. When something goes wrong with the TMJ, we call that a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. You may hear TMJ and TMD used interchangeably to indicate a jaw joint disorder.
TMJ disorders can occur naturally because the jaw joint or the bite develops incorrectly, the cartilage in the TMJ wears away, or another physiological issue. TMD can also be induced if you sustain an injury to the jaw or with prolonged stress from clenching and grinding your teeth. No matter how it happens, TMJ disorders can have a variety of symptoms, including:
painful or sore jaw muscles/joints
jaw temporarily locking open
ear pain
tingling in the fingers
dizziness
jaw popping and clicking
tension headaches
